What Is Botox?

Botox is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA, a prescription botulinum toxin product derived from clostridium botulinum. When precisely injected, botulinum toxin blocks nerve signals to specific facial muscles, temporarily reducing muscle contractions that cause dynamic wrinkles.

How Botox Works

Botulinum toxin type A works by interrupting nerve signaling at the injection site. When the nerve signal is reduced, the targeted muscle relaxes. This decreases muscle contractions responsible for fine lines and deeper facial wrinkles.

Unlike fillers, which restore lost volume, Botox treatments address expression-based wrinkles. Over time, consistent treatment can also help prevent lines from becoming permanently etched into the skin.

Results typically begin appearing within 3–5 days, with full effects of Botox visible around 14 days after injection.

Pre & Post Care Guidelines

Pre-Care

To minimize bruising and side effects:

Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior
Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, fish oil, vitamin E, and certain supplements 7–14 days prior (unless medically necessary)
Schedule treatment at least one month before major events

Post-Care

Remain upright for 6 hours
Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours
Avoid pressure or facial massage for 10 days
Allow 14 days to evaluate full effects of Botox

A follow-up may be scheduled to assess effectiveness of Botox and make minor dose adjustments if needed.
