Types of Chemical Peels
There are several types of chemical peels used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. The depth of the peel depends on the ingredients and concentration of the solution.
Superficial Peels
Also called light chemical peels, superficial peels target the outer layer of skin (epidermis). They often contain alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid.
These peels are ideal for:
Mild discoloration
Early fine lines
Dull skin
Minor acne
Superficial peels involve minimal downtime, and many patients return to normal activities the next day.
Medium-Depth Peels
Medium-depth peels penetrate beyond the outer layer into the upper dermis. These may include trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

Uneven skin tone
Actinic keratosis
More pronounced sun damage
Downtime may include visible peeling for several days.
Deep Chemical Peel
A deep chemical peel penetrates deeper layers of skin and may contain stronger agents such as phenol. Deep chemical peels address significant wrinkles, advanced sun damage, and deeper discoloration.
Deep peels require more downtime and careful post-care. At KÁLLOS, we evaluate whether a deep peel or alternative cosmetic procedures like laser resurfacing may better suit your goals.
Pre-Care Guidelines
To prepare for your chemical peel:
Avoid exfoliating agents 48 hours prior
Discontinue AHAs, BHAs, retinoids, and self-tanners 7 days prior
Avoid waxing or hair removal for 14 days
Limit UV exposure for 14 days
These precautions reduce the risk of complications and optimize results.
Post-Care Guidelines
After your chemical peel:
Wash with tepid water for 24 hours
Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer
Avoid makeup for 24 hours
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily
Avoid active skincare (retinoids, vitamin C, acids) for 14 days
Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning
Peeling skin should never be picked. Allow the natural exfoliation process to occur to protect the new skin forming beneath.
